<biography>
Andres, currently a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, is not and has never been a music major. He started playing the euphonium late in high school on a whim (he thought the band director was cute). Having studied piano briefly as a child, he was able to read music and enjoyed practicing as an escape from study hall. His senior year, a few months after picking up the horn, he made the top ensemble in his high school and began taking lessons from Richard Faller, a bass trombonist near his hometown of Lake Forest, IL.

A year later, Andres bought a Besson Sovereign and went to study computer science at the University of Illinois. Throughout his four years in Champaign, he played in the University of Illinois Bands. He also studied the euphonium with Clint McCanless. Andres discovered brass bands during this period, and his sophomore year auditioned into the U of I British Brass Band under the direction of Peter Griffin. He has continued playing in high-level community brass bands since then, having appeared with Brass Band Northwest and having substituted for the Chicago Brass Band.

"Tack," as he is often known, has been section member of the Madison Brass Band since he arrived in Madison in the fall of 2008, and additionally performs with the UW Concert Band and with the Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble (under the direction of John Stevens). He enjoys being exceptionally punctual for rehearsals and performances with all of these groups. He is also a student of David Spies, studying the euphonium in every spare moment.

Professionally, Andres studies computer science as a graduate student with Michael Swift, focusing on operating systems and their support of emerging hardware. He is also an avid student of foreign languages, and is particularly proud to be regaining his sometime-lost command of the Estonian language, with which he grew up.
</biography>

    <biography>Music has been a big part of my life for many years. I started playing piano at the age of 5, and have also played French horn for over 20 years. A few years ago, I joined the Madison Brass Band and began learning to play the alto horn. I attended UW-Whitewater and studied French Horn in the mid-90’s. I now work full-time at UW-Madison as a graduate coordinator in the Department of French & Italian. I really love my job and all the wonderful people I have had a chance to meet through working there, and I’m blessed to be able to have the flexibility to play music frequently and also find time to attend classes at Upper Iowa University part-time towards eventually earning my Bachelor's degree in psychology. In addition to playing with the Madison Brass Band, I am also a member of the 1st Brigade Band in Watertown, WI, and the Blessed Brass in Madison, WI.</biography>

    <biography>I have been playing tuba since 6th grade, although I had a hiatus of a few years before joining the Madison Brass Band. Before that, I played with the Twin Cities-based Northern Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Wobegon Brass Band, Calhoun Isles Community Band, the Point Brass Quintet, and the Minnesota Symphonic Winds. Before moving to the Twin Cities, I went to school at St. Olaf and played in the St. Olaf Band. I also played with the University of Iowa Symphony Band and Orchestra while doing grad work in engineering. I play tuba here and there with other area groups, and occasionally pick up a trombone is some group gets really desperate for one. I live in Stoughton with my wife, newborn son and a lot of pets.</biography>

    <biography>Nathan Pierce joined the Madison Brass Band in the spring of 2007 and while currently playing soprano cornet, has also played flugelhorn and Bb Bass with the band. He earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Instrumental Music Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in December of 1998. While at the university, he played in numerous ensembles including the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, University Band, Brass Choir, and the Trumpet Ensemble. In addition, Nathan was a four-year member of the UW Marching Band.

Nathan is currently the Director of Bands at Milton High School where he conducts the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, and numerous smaller chamber ensembles. He is also director of the 7th Grade Band and gives 7th and 8th grade lessons at Milton Middle School. Before his appointment at Milton, Nathan taught at DeForest High School for three years, Baldwin-Woodville High School for five years, and in the Weston School District for two years. Nathan keeps active in the competitive marching band venue and has been on the staff of numerous competitive high school marching bands over the past 11 years including Sauk Prairie High School, Columbus High School, and Stoughton High School. He has been selected for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers three times.

In addition to playing in the Madison Brass Band, Nathan plays Eb cornet in the 1st Brigade Band, and trumpet and tuba in the Madison Wind Ensemble. He has previously played both tenor horn and Bb cornet in the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band in Red Wing, MN. Nathan currently serves on the board of directors of the Madison Brass Band and the University of Wisconsin School of Music Alumni Association.

In addition to playing with the band, Nathan has done several arrangements for the ensemble.

Nathan currently lives in DeForest, WI with his wife Amy and their dog Bucky.

On a side note: Mr. Pierce is apparently the only member of this band that when reflecting on John Zowlanek's flugelhorn playing gets a sharp pain in his stomach that he has compared to suffering from food poisoning.</biography>

    <biography>
Musically educated in France with focus on trombone performance (albeit including digressions in the worlds of baritone, euphonium and tuba performance ... the latter being read in trebble clef of course), Bertrand first performed in Europe with classical ensembles (from the Ardennes State Youth Wind Ensemble to the Fives Philarmonic Orchestra), jazz orchestras (Dijon Jazz Band; Club Mediterrannée Jazz Orchestra); and variety orchestras (Joe Bertelli Orchestra).

After moving to the US in 1990, he has performed (and still performs) in equally varied ensembles in Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and Eastern Iowa including, but not limited to: the Madison Brass Band, the Madison Wind Ensemble, the Max Drexler Bavarian Bass Band, the Jeff Peronto Jazz Orchestra, the Glenwood Moravian Church Trombone Choir and The Jerry Stich Circus Band. He also performs as a free lance musician with various groups in the area, including pit orchestras.

Last but not least, finding time to volunteer for music education is an ever present priority, ranging from working sectionals with the low brass students at Monona Grove High School to monthly jazz clinics / concerts at schools throughout Dane county (in addition to driving my teenage daughter to piano and percussion lessons, show choir, band, choir, musicals and local community band practices, and attending all her recitals / shows / concerts).

Current trombones:

Getzen AFR 3062 Bass Trombone

Courtois Prestige 400 Tenor Trombone

Getzen Eterna 998 small bore jazz tenor with slide attachment.

Why perform with the Madison Brass Band? Because I retrieved here (with delight) the music, voicing and repertoire that I grew up with in Europe (thanks Dad for taking your sons with you to YOUR brass band practices ... we're both still playing on two continents and so are you!)
</biography>

    <biography>Paul has been the principal percussionist since joining the group in 2005. He has brought a wealth of experience to the group. During his career he has performed with 5 different symphonies, a series of community bands, swing, jazz and dance bands. Paul volunteers at Waunakee as the drum coach, and has formed a drum club, welcoming drummers from seventh to twelfth grade, performing a feature piece each December. When Paul is not focused on music, he is a human resources professional. The company he works with sells tools to support the business of “administrivia” as it relates to the lifecycle of the employee. Paul has been married to Ruth since 1988. Another member of the percussion section since 2005, his daughter Keelin, has been dad’s “2nd set of hands” for the last 8 years. She has been sadly forced to leave the band to attend college at Ripon. Paul and Ruth also have a son, Ryan, who is a bass player, and still in high school. If you come to their house, be prepared to discuss music, and to be welcomed by their three dogs, Augie, Jaxy and Arya.</biography>

    <biography>Kurt Frisch is one of the newer members of Madison Brass Band, having been with them for less than a year. His Yamaha Euphonium was a gift from his family for which he is very grateful! He moved to Madison to support his wonderful wife who is currently a grad student at UW. Upon his arrival to Madison, Kurt decided that he wished to take over the world. Finding that neither the UW nor MATC offered courses in Global Domination and Subjugation, he scrapped these plans and instead chose to join the local brass group which he heard about from a friend. He has been very happy with his choice. And so has his wife. (Besides, this way Kurt doesn't have to worry about secret agents wrecking his plans 1 second before they come to fruition.) He also enjoys reading, cooking, and fencing (the sport, not the trade).

    <biography>I have played with many musical ensembles through the years, including the Milwaukee Festival Brass and Prairie Brass, but the Madison Brass Band is far and away the greatest assemblage of musical talent known to me. And it's all due to the presence of one Irishman - John Zwolanek. Just by walking in the room, his spirit infuses every soul with an awe and wonder at the limits of our human abilities. I have never found myself in such a position. On one hand, my playing never even approached this high level, which is thrilling. But on the other, I face a slow burning anger and holistic frustration with my prior musical experiences and personal dedication to this, the highest human form of emotional expression. What can resolve this irony? None of us practice medicine like Jonas Salk or think like Albert Einstein, but we are all blessed by their devotion to the world. Should all physicians or physicists quit knowing that the summit has been reached, or is it best for us all to rededicate ourselves to our calling? That is the fundamental irony that John Zwolanek presents in the musical world. I, for one, accept the gift of his profound talent and plan to apply it as a motivating force in my life. Of course, being Irish, he has great advantages over most of our performers – one need only read Geoff McAlister’s wonderful outline of the Celtic peoples to realize the potential that lies in all of us with Irish heritage. Although my genes may not give me the inherent advantages of being Irish as is Zwolanek, I still have within me the ability to come close to the perfection of a Celt. Slainte, Zwolanek!</biography>
